Migraines are chronic headaches that cause significant pain. Headaches often have a pulsating quality and usually occur in the same location on one side of the head. They may last from hours to days. Some migraine sufferers experience an aura, or sensory warning symptoms before or during a headache. These may include flashes of light, blind spots, and tingling in arms or legs. Migraines are often accompanied by extreme sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, and vomiting.
Nearly 30 million Americans suffer with migraine headaches. Researchers once thought that pain was caused by dilation and constriction of blood vessels in the head. They now believe that migraines are a brain disorder involving nerve pathways and brain chemicals.
